How to Make the Most of Your Massage Session

When you schedule a massage, your therapist will want to make sure your session is the best experience possible. And that’s probably what you want, too! But a therapist can only do so much. As a patient, there are a few simple steps you can follow to make sure your massage session is the ultimate relaxation experience.

Ula Katsoulis is a Philadelphia craniosacral therapist who has been developing and practicing her skills in holistic healing since 1994. She is a licensed massage therapist in both Pennsylvania and New York who always puts her patients needs first.

That’s why, as Philadelphia resident’s first choice for a craniosacral therapist, Ula will explain how the following steps can ensure you leave your massage session feeling peaceful and revitalized:

  1. Don’t eat beforehand – Massages generally stimulate digestion, so you don’t want to eat a huge meal right before your session. Eating light is okay, or eat a full meal a few hours prior. This way you’re less likely to feel too full and uncomfortable when you’re supposed to be relaxing.
  2. Timing is everything – Think about what time of day would be best for you to have a massage. Will it make you feel invigorated and be a great start to your day? Or will you want the massage to act as a de-stresser at the end of a long work week? Everyone is different so ask yourself what is right for you!
  3. Plan ahead – The relaxation should start as soon as you walk into the spa or studio. If you’re rushing in late or are stressed about not being on time, your muscles and your mind will be tense. Your therapist will also want to spend a few minutes discussing the goals of the session, so you want to leave ample time for this as well.
  4. Communication is key – As an experienced Philadelphia craniosacral therapist, Ula Katsoulis believes you shouldn’t be afraid to tell your therapist exactly what you want or when the pressure doesn’t feel right. Talk beforehand about any body pain, and speak up if anything during makes you uncomfortable.
  5. Breathe, breathe, breathe! – You won’t truly unwind if you are holding your breath. Oxygen in your blood supply helps loosen tight muscles, so focus on regular and steady breaths.
