How To Stay Pain-Free In Between Massage Therapy Sessions

Posted in: Ula's Blog | February 5, 2016

If you get massages regularly, then you know the time between sessions can feel slow. So, what can you do in between massage therapy sessions to keep pain or tension at bay?

Ula Katsoulis can speak into this issue. Ula is an expert craniosacral therapist in Philadelphia who has been refining her skills in manual therapy since 1994. In this blog, she’ll offer a few self-care tips you can do at home or even at the office to help preserve the effects of massage therapy in between sessions.

Tips from Philadelphia’s Trusted Craniosacral Therapist

1. Hot and Cold Therapy – Heat is incredibly soothing and can help the muscles relax, while cold numbs the pain and decreases inflammation. If you have tight knots after a long day at work, try using a heat pad or taking a warm bath. Or take a pack of ice to a minor injury to reduce the swelling and pain.
2. Stretching – This is something you can do at work, when you need a quick break! Stretch the areas your therapist works on before your next session. This will increase blood flow and reduces stiffness, so you can return to your tasks feeling better.
3. Self-Massage – It doesn’t sound like the most glamorous thing to do, but giving your own shoulders a good rub can reduce headaches and release stress. A foam roller or even a tennis ball can help with tight muscles, too.
4. R & R – Sometimes all it takes is a little rest and relaxation. If your knee hurts from running, try switching up your workout routine by incorporating low-impact activities like swimming. And make sure you’re getting lots of sleep to allow for maximum muscle recovery; experts recommend seven to eight hours a night. That’s more than many Americans report getting!
