Does Heat Really Worsen Back Pain?

Posted in: Ula's Blog | July 29, 2016

In summer, excessive heat can cause chronic back pain sufferers to experience a surge in their symptoms. Additional factors may also worsen back pain when the heat is on, like changes in barometric pressure and humidity, both of which can add to inflammation and muscle tension.

If you suffer from chronic back pain, how can you avoid worsening symptoms now that summer is in full force in Philadelphia? Here are a few suggestions from our Philadelphia craniosacral therapy provider:

  • Stay cool – Choosing activities that keep you out of the heat will help prevent chronic back pain flareups. Such activities may include swimming at an indoor pool, going to the gym, playing indoor soccer, etc. These activities let you enjoy summer fun without exposing you to harsh weather.
  • Drink plenty of liquids – If you already have back or neck pain, the last thing you want is to become dehydrated, since dehydration alone can cause aches and pains. With this in mind, you should drink extra water or other clear liquids throughout the summer to stay hydrated and ward off unnecessary pain.
  • Choose clothing that helps regulate your body temperature – Light-colored fabrics made of either cotton or linen are your best bet for staying cool in the summer. You may also want to invest in clothing that’s specially made to let your skin breathe in hot weather.
  • Schedule outdoor activities at the coolest times of the day – Naturally, there will be some things you simply need to do outside during the hot summer. To minimize the impact of the heat, schedule your outdoor activities for the coolest times of the day – right after the sun rises or right before it sets.

Still experiencing severe back pain after following our tips? Think about trying out craniosacral therapy in Philadelphia. Through gentle massage, craniosacral therapy aims to help the body activate its own self-healing mechanisms, for relief that’s holistic and sustainable. Many craniosacral therapy clients have experienced relief from symptoms related to migraines, TMJ, back and neck pain, brain and spinal cord injuries and much more.
